In the month of the SMEs, Belgian newspaper De Tijd (The Time) presents three theses for a different entrepreneur every day. He or she then gives the baton to another SME’er. Also Eric Dumortier of GBO Belgium has participated in this ‘relay’.

To strengthen the motto: ‘Together we get more out of waste!’ the the Kroonring (Crown Ring) will be present with a booth at the 2010 Municipal Waste Conference in Ede. The conference takes place on Thursday, November 11 from 9:30 to 17:00.
GBO Projects, together with the organizing party Nedvang, has organized a playful surprise for all conference visitors. The Crown Ring booth is next to the one of Nedvang.
The conference is intended for local policy officials in the field of waste management and cleaning services. Up.
On October 21 the Design Pressure Cooker (DPC) with the theme ‘Health’ took place in the Green Campus in Helmond. The so-called DPC’s are organized by Syntens for designers and entrepreneurs to stimulate cooperation in an accessible way.
Twelve teams of designers and entrepreneurs from the food- and health sector had to work on a design brief, which the entrepreneurs had previously submitted. After analyzing all the deign briefs, GBO was linked to Dolphys Medical BV from Eindhoven. read more… Up.
The street furniture which was developed by GBO in collaboration with Stiels, has proven to be a great success. The products that were introduced during the Day of Public Space, are highly acclaimed by the audience. Both objects have a basic frame of bent pipe only.
One design is a seating object based on the iconic Evoluon from Eindhoven. The other item is a bench that can be placed around a tree. Up.
The introduction of the Doutreligne Seven is spotted as one of the 10 must-sees at the international design biennale Interieur in Kortrijk. The nomination comes from the Young Designers United platform and the Interior foundation.
Besides the positive reaction of the general audience, Saturday the 16th was also the day of the enthusiastic visit of Minister Stefaan de Clerck (Minister of Justice, titular mayor of Kortrijk and president of Kortrijk Design Region) and Hilde Crevits (Minister of Transport). Together with master of design Marc Dubois (Kortrijk Design, initiator of the book Design x50), the new grand piano of Doutreligne was called an example of style and a magnificent result of cooperation between Piano’s Maene and GBO Design. This year GBO will exhibit the design piano Doutreligne 7 (Seven) at the Dutch Design Week. The design piano of Maene was previously introduced on the international design biennale Interieur in Kortrijk (BE).
The name 7 (Seven) is derived from the shape of the front legs; the piano is bowing to its pianist, as he greets an audience. The instrument is available as a real black label and a white satin with a selectable 7 color accents.
The Dutch Design Week is held from 23 till October 31. GBO can be found in Hall 3 of the ‘Klokgebouw’ in Eindhoven. Up.
GBO is one of the finalists for de Gouden Noot 2010 (the Golden Nut, Dutch only) competition. This year’s Gouden Noot is issued for the 25th time by the Dutch Packaging Center (NVC). GBO received the recognition for the design of the Soft Care Sensations for Diversey. The NVC will promote the design on a European and worldwide scale on various packaging exhibitions. The dispenser will also be included in the EPIC European Packaging Directory 2011. Up.
Power Plate On the party to celebrate its tenth birthday, Power Plate introduced their newest product, the Power Bike. During the festivities, the spin-bike based on the Power Bike principle was revealed. GBO supported Power Plate during the development of this innovative product.

Designregio Kortrijk Designregio Kortrijk publishes the book Design X50 for the third time. In the book, the 50 most innovative companies in the region are displayed with their product. In these 50 companies are as many as nine clients of GBO, of which four products in the book were developed by GBO:

The Belgium-based Piano’s Meane introduces their new piano Doutreligne 7 (Seven) at the Design fair Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium. The contemporary design of the instrument was done by GBO. Doutreligne 7 combines simplicity with pure elegance. With its oblique legs the piano kneels down invitingly to be played.
The Interieur fair is held from October 15 until October 24 in Kortrijk. Up.
Bébé-Jou has introduced a new product range at the Kind + Jugend in Cologne. The range, which was launched under the new brand ’Luma’, includes a bath, bath stand, bath seat and a baby bucket. GBO designed the sustainable products with a contemporary styling. By using smart design constructions, less material is used which reduces CO2 emission during production significantly.

GBO has received two nominations received for the European Aluminium Award 2010! The recognition is awarded by an independent international jury to products that use aluminum in an innovative manner. The award is issued every two years and this year for the seventh time.
The nominations for GBO are the VP MicroLab in the category ‘Industrial Products / Mechenical Engineering and Electronics’ and the CarvX in the category ‘Consumer Products / Innovation’. Up.
After the success of previous years Food4Future is organized for the 4th time. More students than ever are working creatively as food designer. They will inspire businesses, innovate and maybe even create a new success story. The 2010 theme is Food&Co. Through the concept of Co-creation, the youngsters design new products based on existing brands. This year GBO will be responsible again for supporting the students and their projects.

GBO’s Crownring (Dutch only) has been selected as ’Thing of the Week’ (Dutch only) at Elsevier magazine. ‘Thing of the Week’ is a weekly category at Elsevier’s website which puts, among others, striking and innovative products in a spotlight. Up.
The Dagravit Total 30 Dispenser has been successfully introduced at , amongst others, Kruidvat, Trekpleister, Etos and DA. The dispenser was designed to increase the convenience of taking the daily dosage of vitamins.
Design and engineering of the product was done by GBO Design Engineering. Tooling, production and delivery was realized by GBO Projects.

Design Connection Brainport organizes in cooperation with Pro Materia on September 10 an inspiration day during Design September in Brussels. The day is organized on the occasion of the opening of the traveling exhibition “Brainport Design for Living Happy”. GBO is part of this exhibition with Dremefa’s Bobike Maxi Tour. During the day, a delegation of award winning designers and companies from Eindhoven will visit (designer)shops and exhibitions in Brussels. Up.
GBO is selected in July for Groeiversneller (Growth Accelerator), an initiative of the Ministry of Economy and the Innovation Platform. The Growth Accelerator program allows businesses to grow faster to increase employment and promote internationalization.
The program starts in September. Up.
Brabant Brand is an initiative of the province of Noord-Brabant. The label was founded to promote the entire province of Noord-Brabant (Dutch only), a region with particular characteristics. In particular, the unique combination of ‘high-touch’ - such as hospitality and friendly - with ‘high-tech’ makes the Brabantians also so successful.
Recently, GBO got selected to be part of Brabant Brand. The ultimate goal is to shape a concept with Brabant Brand that creates a clear and recognizable added value in expressions of individual organizations. Up.
The black Trayformer of Atlanta Office Products, which was previously awarded with the Product of the Year Award, is awarded with the Blue Angel certificate. The certificate indicates a company’s commitment to a better environment. Besides the Trayformer, two other products of Atlanta were awarded with the Blue Angel logo, the oldest and best-known eco-label in the world to be awarded to companies that consistently demonstrate their commitment to a better environment. The label, launched in 1978, has become the benchmark for environmentally responsible products and services.

Objective research shows that good design is an important economic and commercial value. The study was commissioned by the BNO and conducted by the Erasmus University Rotterdam and TU Delft amongst 400 managers of Dutch companies. One of the conclusions of the report is that the financial performance of a company increases with an average of 20 percent!

Eric Dumortier of GBO gives a Pecha Kucha lecture in Antwerp on June 29, Industrial Design World Day. The lecture is part of a program that starts at 16:00 at the Antwerp University Artesis. The program is hosted by Flanders InShape together with two Flemish design colleges and the Association of Flemish designers.

At the 31st of May, another Design Café will be initiated by Brainport. This time the location of the Design Café is the innovative Satelliet in Breda. The meeting is held within the scope of SME Design.Brabant, a Brabantian innovationclass about design, SME’s and leisure.
Jeroen op ten Berg of GBO will give a reading on the process of the shock absorbing stirrup of GPG Stirrups, which recently reached the 13th place in the SME Innovation Top 100! Up.
By the 25th of May, two designs of GBO were featured in the Innovation Top 100 of the Dutch Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (Dutch only). The Innovation Top 100 is the national ranking of the most innovative companies in the SME.
The design of the new shock absorber for GPG Stirrups reached the 13th place. The relationship between GBO and GPG was created during a Design Pressure Cooker (DPC) of Syntens.
GBO Projects is located at the 25th place with the so-called Crownring. The patented ring was developed by GBO. Through its establishment in Hong Kong GBO projects has managed tooling, production and logistics.
This makes GBO the highest ranked company in the region of Southeast Brabant.

Rob Crins of GBO Projects was a guest at Brabant Business TV on the Brabant10 channel. Brabant Business is weekly talkshow of half an hour, where presentors René Weijmans and Anne-Marie Fokkens receive guests from Brabantian businesses.

By invitation of the Brainport Foundation, Jeroen op ten Berg of GBO Helmond and Eric Dumortier of GBO Antwerp will attend a multiple-day networkmeeting in Shanghai. The Brainport Networking Dinner Event is, besides other meetings, performance arts and exhibitions programmed in the Dutch Culture Centre (DCC). DCC is, in addition to the Dutch pavillion Happy Street, a part of the World Expo 2010 in Sjanghai.
Also, during one of the meetings on the 17th of May, an exhibition of the Van Abbe Museum will be opened for public by H.R.H. princess Máxima. On the 20th, Eric Dumortier will give a lecture at the Expo area on GBO and the creative industry. The complete programme runs from the 16th untill the 21st of May. Up.
Commissioned by Atlanta, GBO has developed the Tray Former. The new product has received the innovation award at the 14th of April in the Business Design Centre during the Office Product Show in London. The product is sold on both the consumer and professional office market.
During the development of this letter tray sustainability was key. The tray is supplied as a plane and four parts to build. This efficient design ensures that far less air is transferred during transportation. By taking full advantage of plastic are the designers have also succeeded in integrating 4 paper clips. Moreover, the plastic is 100% recyclable. Up.
The World Expo will begin the 1st of May this year with its motto ‘Better City, Happy Life’ in Shanghai. More than 190 countries and 50 organizations will be present on 5.3 square kilometers of exhibition grounds. ‘Happy Street’ is the motto of the Dutch pavilion, designed by the Eindhoven-based architect John Körmeling. The pavilion is an figure eight-shaped steet, with 8 being the Chinese number of luck. The GBO-designed VP Microlab from Virtual Proteins will be exhibited in one of the houses on this street.
The exhibition will run from the 1st of May to the 31st of October 2010.

GBO participates in the COLOR! exhibition which can be seen from until 12 September in the Designhuis in Eindhoven. The exhibition’s theme revolves around the relation between color and design. Color evokes emotions, associations and reactions and influences e.g. the atmosphere of an interior or a product’s appeal. GBO provides four products for the exhibition where color is a key feature. Up.
The Bobike Maxi City is selected to be a part of Brainport’s exhibition on the ESEF. The exhibition is displayed in a complete design pavilion, which is introduced for the first time. The pavilion is presented as DESIGNL 2010, and shows a representative overview of the market leaders in Dutch design.

Market leader DEK has set the new screenprint standard for mounting Printed Circuit Boards with their new Horizon IX machine. For our client Vitalo we provided the creative process of this new machine. Market positioning, styling, concept 3D CAD setup and coordination of the prototyping were guided by us.
The entire project is completed in close cooperation with Vitalo (producer of the housing) and DEK (final client). The first reactions from the market are very promising. Up.
This year’s Material Café will take place on the 22nd of February in the Witte Dame in Eindhoven. The by Material Matters organized event will host numerous presentations on the topic ‘Sustainability’. One presentation will be given by Jeroen op ten Berg from GBO. He will explain how sustainability plays a role in its different phases and how the use of Solidworks Sustainable contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of products.

The Dremel Hobbytable which was introduced in September 2009 by Dremel has proven to be a veritable blockbuster. The introduction for the holidays has led to the series being almost sold out. GBO Design-Engineering has designed this special edition, which was delivered turnkey by GBO Projects, including tooling, manufacturing and logistics.

As of January GBO designs more sustainable. Translating the environment and sustainability into practice isn’t an easy task. But with the newest product in the SolidWorks range, “green design” becomes a part of the Creative Phase. The software by Cadmes, supplier of SolidWorks, can already take the environmental impact into account during the development of a product. Cadmes is an active promotor of this new technology.

By request of Eindhoven based company Liquavista, GBO has designed an eReader concept. The eReader, named ‘Pebble’, features Liquavista’s newest colordisplay based on electrowetting. This groundbreaking technology is very energy efficient and offers more possibilities than the current generation eReader displays, such as video playback.
The Pebble will be introduced at the leading CES consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas. CES 2010 will be held from 7th to 10th of January.

Two weeks ago the first Kroonring was successfully introduced in the community of Ridderkerk. Ridderkerk is the first town in the Netherlands to apply this effective collecting point for bags of separated plastic waste. The Kroonring supports the new way of separating waste and is part of the national Plastic heroes campaign. First reactions of the community and its members are very positive.
